Industry representatives and Curtin Malaysia community learn more about Industry 4.0

Miri – 16 November 2018 – Over 120 representatives from various sectors of industry and students and staff of Curtin University Malaysia (Curtin Malaysia) gathered for an ‘Industry 4.0 Awareness Programme’ event at the university campus recently.

Organised by Curtin Malaysia’s Faculty of Engineering of Engineering and Science with support from the Sarawak Ministry of Industrial and Entrepreneur Development and Sarawak Multimedia Authority, it was aimed at introducing the concept of Industry 4.0 and encouraging the adoption of automation and data exchange technologies to industries in Sarawak.

In his opening remarks, Curtin Malaysia’s Pro Vice-Chancellor, President and Chief Executive Professor Jim Mienczakowski said Curtin Malaysia would continue to host such awareness programmes in collaboration with Sarawak state government bodies to advance the state’s Industry 4.0 agenda.

“In doing so, we hope there will be a greater understanding, particularly within local industry, of its significance and how the adoption of modern processes, automation and digital technology can benefit us,” he said.

“The involvement of Curtin Malaysia, which is fast embracing the new technologies with its research, online distributed learning facilities and new courses in software engineering and cyber security, and soon, a new Digital Centre for Excellence, shows that the education sector has also had to keep pace,” Professor Mienczakowski added.

The programme included talks entitled ‘Introduction to Industry 4.0 and its Implications to Industries including SMEs’ by Ho Nee Shen, Software Project Lead of Intel Malaysia, and ‘The National Industry 4.0 Policy Overview’ by Ministry of International Trade and Industry Director Griffith Jones anak Goba.

Wilson Deng, Chief Executive Officer and founder of Arcstone Pte. Ltd., Singapore, also delivered a talk entitled ‘Getting Started on Industry 4.0 – The Transformation Journey of SMEs’.

The talks were followed by a projects showcase by students of Curtin Malaysia featuring their ‘Smart Metering for Energy Saving’, ‘IoT for Green Wall’, and ‘Blockchain Technology for Document Preservation’ projects, and parallel workshops facilitated by John Chin, Business Development Manager of Schneider Electric Industrial Services.

The parallel workshops included demonstrations and case study discussions, as well as discussions on identifying problems and potential improvement areas in production, marketing and management processes.
