Preparing students for wide range of professional roles in building and construction industry

Miri – 13 July 2018 – Curtin University Malaysia (Curtin Malaysia) is introducing a new course in construction management that is more management-oriented compared to other construction-related courses, and prepares students for a wide range of professional roles in the building and construction industry.

Available with its current second semester, the 4-year Bachelor of Applied Science (Hons.) in Construction Management is being offered to meet a growing demand for a comprehensive course in construction management designed in collaboration with construction industry professionals that goes well beyond quantity surveying.

The course focuses on a broad range of interrelated disciplines, including domestic, commercial and civil construction, and is taught by a dedicated team of professionals with qualifications and experience in construction-related disciplines.

Its core subjects include construction technology, measurement and estimating, project management, contracts administration, and building law and economics.

As communication is fundamental to construction and computer applications widely used, students will also gain critical communication and computer skills, specifically in Building Information Modelling (BIM) tools.

To make them industry ready, they will be required to complete 80 days of work experience prior to graduation. They will undertake supervised research projects in the fourth year, as well as complete projects and assignments related to the construction industry throughout the course. In addition, they will have the opportunity to participate in supervised visits to construction sites and international study trips.

“The course is one of the most popular courses at our main campus in Perth and we expect it to be equally popular here in Malaysia too as we have received a lot of requests to offer such a course, both from potential students and industry,” said Associate Professor Muhammad Ekhlasur Rahman, Head of the Department of Civil and Construction Engineering at Curtin Malaysia’s Faculty of Engineering and Science.

“It gives students practical training and education in construction management, and as work integrated learning is emphasised, they will have the opportunity to participate in work experience and supervised site visits.”

“Graduates will be able to find employment in a wide range of roles, including quantity and building surveyors, building contractors, contract administrators, project managers, construction managers, estimators and property developers,” he said.

Associate Professor Muhammad added that there is an increasing demand for such professionals in the country and, according to JobStreet.com‘s Salary Report for 2018, the construction sector ranks in the top five across all regions in Malaysia for highest entry-level salaries.

The course is recognised by the Malaysian Ministry of Higher Education and is professionally accredited by the Australian Institute of Quantity Surveyors, the Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors, and the Board of Quantity Surveyors, Malaysia. It is also currently being considered by the Australian Institute of Building.

Two other new courses in the new semester are a Bachelor of Science in Computing (Software Engineering) and Bachelor of Science in Computing (Cyber Security).
