A New Chapter for Higher Education in Sarawak

The Free Tertiary Education Sarawak (FTES) plan announced by the Sarawak government is one of the landmark initiatives proposed under the state’s Post COVID-19 Development Strategy (PCDS) 2030, and is a crucial step towards its human capital development strategy. This plan is welcomed by many talented and capable Sarawakians who have dreamed of higher education but faced financial barriers that made university out of reach. Now, with FTES, this dream will become a reality and create big impacts.

FTES and PCDS represent the state’s vision for a knowledge-driven, innovative and developed society, by strengthening human capital, promoting digitalisation and technology adoption, and reducing dependence on external expertise. This reflects Sarawak’s commitment to investing in its people as its most valuable resource. As the state prepares for future growth, it will depend on a skilled and adaptable workforce, particularly in key sectors such as energy, green technology, digital transformation, engineering and sustainable finance and development. Graduates who can solve problems, drive innovation and contribute to regional development will be highly valued, making a dependable supply of well-trained and capable talent essential for Sarawak’s long-term progress.

For many families in Sarawak, especially those in rural and interior areas, the cost of higher education has long been a major obstacle. Tuition fees, accommodation and living expenses often become barriers for students, even if they have the potential and academic capability. FTES will change this by supporting tuition fees and living expenses for eligible students. This will make a significant difference to ambitious young Sarawakians, allowing them to focus on their studies without worrying about financial pressures. By removing the cost barrier, the Sarawak government sends a clear message that talent and ambition, rather than financial ability, should determine who gets to learn and succeed.

At Curtin University Malaysia, we are proud to be part of this transformation. FTES complements our commitment to making a quality education accessible and relevant to Sarawak’s needs. Our world-class and award-winning teaching and research, global connections and industry-focused curriculum equip students with real-world skills, ensuring they graduate not only with a qualification, but the confidence and know-how to thrive in their chosen fields.

We welcome talented Sarawakian students who may not have previously considered higher education, including first-generation students and those from rural or disadvantaged backgrounds. FTES will also support greater social mobility, a more diverse student population and a richer campus culture. Our holistic approach to employability and student development, through internship placements, career and academic programs, industry collaborations and active student life, will help shape Sarawak’s next generation of leaders.

Here at Curtin, we see FTES as both an opportunity and a responsibility. We are committed to nurturing, educating and empowering the next generation of Sarawakians towards meaningful careers and contributing to the state’s continued development and prosperity. As we prepare to enhance our students’ learning and university experience, we hope FTES will open doors for more young Sarawakians to dream bigger, learn deeper and take confident steps towards a brighter future.
