By Dr Voltisa Thartori
Have you ever wondered why people think, feel, and behave they way they do? If so, a degree in psychological sciences is the perfect choice for you! Psychology helps you to understand human behaviour. Psychology can help you in your everyday life by improving your communication skills, relationships, and the ability to manage stress. It can also be used to make better decisions and improve your mental health and well-being.
By learning about psychology, you can understand people and the world around you better and use that knowledge to improve your own life and the lives of others. Psychology will prepare you with skills that can lead you to careers in healthcare, education, research, and more.
At Curtin University, we specialise in psychological sciences, offering a strong program that combines scientific knowledge with practical application. Our graduates are empowered with the tools to transform society for the better, playing a crucial role in advancing human welfare and serving the public interest.
What is psychological science?
Psychological science focuses on understanding the principles of human behaviour and cognition through research and evidence-based practices. It is a multipurpose field, combining theory and application, and can be tailored to fit your career aspirations.
According to the APA: “The science of psychology benefits society and enhance our lives. Psychologists examine the relationships between brain function and behaviour and the environment and behaviour, applying what they learn to illuminate our understanding and improve the world around us.”
Futhermore, psychological science relies on experimental research grounded in the scientific method to deepen our understanding on psychology. It applies research findings to develop evidence-based strategies, theories, and practices for professional psychological use. The essence of this field lies in utilising science to enhance psychology’s positive impact on humanity.
As an educator, I’ve witnessed how my students transformed through this field of study. Many came in with a curiosity to understand the human mind and why people behave they way they do but left with a deep understanding of themselves and others, as well as practical skills to address real-world challenges.

Psychological sciences graduates typically find employment as counsellors, mental health advocates, or research assistants in healthcare settings. These positions help people tackle their obstacles and achieve better mental health outcomes.

- Education and development
Psychological sciences also play a vital role in shaping educational practices. Specialists in this area can work in schools or educational organisations, supporting students with developmental needs or advising on curriculum design to enhance learning outcomes.

- Research and academia
If you’re passionate about contributing to the advancement of knowledge, research might be your calling. The skills developed in psychological sciences—such as designing experiments, analysing data, and interpreting human behaviour—are highly sought after in academic and research institutions.
Guiding students as they present findings at conferences or publish research is one of the most rewarding parts of my role. Seeing their ideas shape future conversations in psychology is inspiring.
-
- Human resources and workplace psychology
Psychological values are incredibly useful in understanding workplace dynamics. Graduates can excel in human resources by applying psychological insights to improve recruitment processes, employee satisfaction, and organisational performance.
